SBA Families:

Greetings! We hope this finds you well and that you have been able to enjoy a little bit of peace and relaxation before we gear up for another year of challenge and learning. The first day of school for the 2018-2019 school year is Wednesday, August 22. Additionally, we invite all new Knights and Crusaders to join us for New Student Orientation on Monday, August 20 at 6 PM. This will be an opportunity to see your schedule, to meet your teachers, and to become a little more comfortable with the coming school year.

We also take this opportunity to continue encouraging our students to take on a serious reading project during the summer. It is a critical way to prepare for the upcoming school year and for life beyond SBA. So many of us wish we knew more words, wish that we could express ourselves better both in speaking and in writing, and wish that we just knew more information–all of this is possible by incorporating reading into our lives. Video games and social media can be a fun and stimulating part of life, but there are truly more edifying and lasting effects that will come from reading. A willingness to read is one of the top factors in predicting academic success. To that end, we are including a couple of links (at the bottom of this email) to suggested reading lists comprised of books that have a proven track record with many young adult readers. We encourage each of our students to pick (at least) one to read this summer. It may not change lives, but if it can just open minds a little bit to the great power of reading, it will have been worth the effort.

Thank you again for being part of this learning adventure. We look forward to sharing much success in the coming year. Continue to enjoy the summer, and we look forward to seeing you in August.

Sincerely,

Mike Grummert–Vice Principal
